Solar Battery Storage Explained: Usable Capacity, DoD, Efficiency & Cycles

Key points & steps
- Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), which describes stored energy rather than instantaneous power. Compare usable capacity as well as headline or nominal capacity.
- A battery-management system normally protects part of the battery’s state of charge, so the amount available to the household can differ from the nominal figure. Manufacturer specifications and app reserve settings determine the practical usable range.
- Depth of discharge (DoD) describes how much of the battery capacity is discharged from a fuller state. Do not assume one universal safe DoD percentage; modern systems manage this differently and warranties define permitted operation.
- Round-trip efficiency accounts for energy lost when charging, storing and later discharging electricity. A battery cannot return every kWh put into it, so savings estimates should include these losses.
- Power rating (kW) is separate from energy capacity (kWh). A large-capacity battery with a modest power limit may not run every high-load appliance simultaneously even though it contains plenty of stored energy.
- Cycle life and warranties are usually expressed through a mixture of years, throughput, state-of-health and operating conditions. Compare the actual warranty terms rather than one marketing cycle number.
- Battery size should reflect solar surplus, household consumption timing, tariff strategy and desired backup reserve. A battery that is too large may sit under-used; one that is too small may fill early and export the remaining surplus.
- Time-of-use tariffs can change the use case because a compatible system may charge from the grid during cheaper periods and discharge during more expensive periods, subject to tariff and system settings.
- Backup/EPS operation needs a system specifically designed for islanded supply during outages; ordinary grid-connected battery operation does not imply the home remains powered when the network fails.
Practical tips
- Compare usable kWh, charge/discharge kW, round-trip efficiency and warranty together rather than buying on capacity alone.
- Battery economics depend strongly on tariff and household timing, so a higher self-consumption percentage is not automatically the same thing as the highest financial return.
- Keep manufacturer clearances, temperature limits and installation-location requirements in the design; battery placement is not only an aesthetic choice.
