  1. Start with the heating schedule and thermostat. Correcting excessive temperatures, unnecessary operating hours or a badly positioned thermostat can reduce waste without replacing the heating appliance.
  2. Check thermostatic radiator valves and basic controls for obvious faults or rooms that are routinely overheated while others remain cold.
  3. Replace remaining inefficient frequently used lamps with suitable LEDs and fix obvious “always on” lighting where timers, occupancy controls or better habits would be appropriate.
  4. Inspect external doors, opening windows, loft hatches and service penetrations for unintended draughts, while keeping purpose-provided ventilation clear.
  5. Check accessible loft insulation for major gaps, compression or obviously low coverage before assuming a more expensive whole-house measure should come first.
  6. Insulate accessible hot-water pipework and review an older cylinder jacket where suitable, while keeping controls and safety components clear.
  7. Fix maintenance defects that increase heat loss or moisture, such as failed window seals, leaking gutters, damaged external sealant or doors that no longer close properly.
  8. Review energy bills and the existing EPC recommendations after the basic corrections. Use that information to decide whether the next capital step should be insulation, windows, heating or renewables.
  9. If a major refurbishment is already planned, do not spend twice: coordinate low-cost interim work with the future fabric/heating plan so temporary improvements are not immediately ripped out.

  • Low-cost measures will not transform every inefficient property, but they can expose where the remaining heat-loss problems actually are.
  • Do not block ventilation to eliminate a draught; distinguish uncontrolled leakage from intentional ventilation.
  • A cheap boiler replacement is not necessarily a sensible first move if a major insulation project is about to reduce the design heat load.
