How to Wall-Mount a TV Safely: VESA, Brackets & Wall Fixings
Plan a TV wall mount around the TV’s VESA pattern and weight, the bracket’s safe working load and the actual wall construction.
Key points & steps
- Check the exact TV model, weight and VESA mounting pattern in the manufacturer documentation before buying the bracket.
- Choose a wall mount that supports the TV size, VESA pattern and weight with a suitable safety margin and use the bolt size/depth specified for the TV and bracket.
- Choose a viewing position that avoids excessive height, glare and heat sources. Many manufacturers recommend positioning the centre of the screen around seated eye level where practical.
- Identify the wall construction and locate sound fixing points. Large/heavy TVs need an installation that transfers load into structure rather than relying on weak plaster or an unknown lining.
- Scan the drilling area for concealed services and plan cable routing without burying unsuitable flexible leads in walls or creating inaccessible electrical connections.
- Mark and level the bracket carefully, drill only after rechecking the fixing locations and install the wall fixings specified for the substrate and load.
- Use two people to lift and hang most TVs and follow the bracket manufacturer’s locking/safety mechanism exactly.
- Check ventilation clearances, cable strain and bracket locks before releasing the TV and periodically check accessible fasteners for movement.
Practical tips
- Never assume the wall plugs supplied with a third-party bracket are suitable for your wall.
- A bracket can be rated for the TV weight while the wall/fixings are not—both parts of the system matter.
- Fireplace locations can expose TVs to heat and often force an uncomfortably high viewing position; check the TV manufacturer’s location guidance.
