How to Unblock a Sink: Plunge, Clean the Trap & Test the Waste

- Remove standing debris from the waste opening and check whether the blockage affects only this sink or several fixtures, which can indicate a deeper drainage problem.
- Part-fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger cup. Block the overflow opening where present so pressure is directed into the waste.
- Plunge firmly several times, keeping a good seal around the waste, then test the flow. Avoid mixing plunging with chemical drain cleaners that may splash back.
- If the blockage remains and the trap is accessible, place a bowl or bucket underneath before loosening the trap while supporting the pipework.
- Empty and clean grease, food, hair or other debris from the trap. Check that seals and washers are present, undamaged and seated correctly.
- Reassemble the trap squarely without forcing misaligned pipework. Hand-tighten plastic compression fittings and follow the fitting instructions for any further tightening.
- Run water through the sink and inspect every disturbed joint for leaks, then fill and release the bowl to give the waste a higher-flow test.
- If the blockage is deeper, repeatedly returns, affects several fixtures or the waste pipework is damaged, stop dismantling and use appropriate drainage or plumbing help.

- Do not combine different chemical drain cleaners or dismantle a trap that may contain corrosive cleaner.
