How to Replace a Toilet Seat: Measure, Fit & Align It

Measure the pan and fixing centres, remove the old seat and fit a compatible replacement so it sits firm, level and centred.

Before buying a replacement, measure the toilet pan shape, overall seat length and width, and the centre-to-centre spacing of the fixing holes.
Check whether the existing seat uses top-fix or bottom-fix hardware and make sure the replacement kit is compatible with the pan and available access.
Remove the old fixings using the appropriate tool while supporting the seat. Use penetrating lubricant only where suitable and avoid cracking the ceramic by applying excessive force.
Clean and dry the fixing area thoroughly once the old seat is removed, especially around the fixing holes and hinge positions.
Assemble the new hinges and fixing hardware in the order specified by the manufacturer, leaving enough movement for final alignment.
Centre the seat on the pan, check that the lid and seat clear the cistern and pan correctly, then tighten both sides gradually and evenly.
Open and close the seat several times and apply light sideways pressure to confirm it does not shift.
Recheck the fixings after a short period of use because some new seat hardware settles slightly and may need a final gentle adjustment.

Do not overtighten metal fixings against ceramic; the pan can crack.
Photograph awkward old fixings before removal if access is limited.
If the pan has concealed fixings, choose a replacement designed for top access rather than improvising unsuitable hardware.
