- Choose the shelf position and think about the real load it will carry, including heavy books, kitchenware or objects that may be added later rather than just the empty shelf.
- Identify the wall construction as accurately as possible. Solid masonry, timber studs, dot-and-dab plasterboard and hollow stud walls need different fixing strategies.
- Check for likely cable and pipe routes before drilling. Electrical cables are commonly routed vertically or horizontally from switches and sockets, but a detector and sensible caution are still needed.
- Mark bracket positions with a level and make sure the bracket spacing is suitable for the shelf material and expected load so the shelf does not sag between supports.
- Select fixings with a published suitability/load rating for the wall substrate. Avoid choosing a generic wall plug simply because it fits the drill bit.
- Drill to the correct diameter and depth without enlarging the hole, and stop if the material encountered does not match what you expected.
- Tighten fixings enough to seat the bracket firmly without crushing plasterboard, stripping the plug or distorting the bracket.
- Load the shelf gradually and check for movement before placing valuable or heavy items on it.
Practical tips
- The weakest part of a shelf installation is often the wall fixing, not the shelf board.
- For very heavy loads, fixing into structural timber or sound masonry is usually preferable to relying on lightweight hollow-wall fixings.
- If you are uncertain about hidden electrics or pipework, change the fixing position or get competent help rather than drilling experimentally.
