How to Cut In Paint Like a Professional

Master the sharp, clean line along ceilings and skirting boards without wobbly edges.

Key points & steps

Choose a high-quality 2-inch or 1.5-inch angled synthetic sash brush.
Dip only the bottom third of the bristles into the paint, then gently tap against the rim—never scrape.
Place the brush bristles 2–3mm away from the ceiling line, letting the bristles fan out under gentle pressure.
Guide the brush steadily with your shoulder and arm rather than your wrist for long straight strokes.
Feather the outer edge of the paint stroke so it blends seamlessly when rolled.

Don’t rush: cutting in slowly once saves multiple rounds of touch-ups later.
Keep a damp microfibre cloth in your pocket to immediately wipe accidental slips.
