  1. Most home energy systems monitor power flowing between the solar array, house, battery and electricity grid.
  2. A common priority is to supply current household demand from solar first, reducing electricity imported from the grid.
  3. When solar generation exceeds household demand, compatible systems can charge the home battery before exporting remaining surplus.
  4. Later in the day the battery can discharge to support household demand, reducing the amount bought from the grid.
  5. Time-of-use tariffs can make scheduled charging useful: some households charge a battery or EV during cheaper periods and use or avoid charging during expensive periods.
  6. Smart EV chargers may support scheduled charging, solar-surplus charging or a mixture of both, depending on the charger, tariff and system integration.
  7. Automation rules should reflect the household’s priorities: lowest cost, highest self-consumption, backup reserve, EV readiness or a combination of these.

Practical tips

  • Automation names and available settings vary significantly between manufacturers.
  • Leaving some battery reserve may be useful where backup capability is important, but it reduces the capacity available for everyday bill optimisation.
  • Compare import and export rates before assuming storing every surplus kWh is always financially best.
