Home Lighting Basics: Ambient, Task & Accent Lighting
Plan comfortable home lighting by combining general illumination with task and accent light rather than relying on one bright central fitting.
Key points & steps
- Start with ambient lighting: the general background light that lets you move around and use the room comfortably.
- Add task lighting where detail matters, such as worktops, desks, reading chairs, mirrors and hobby areas.
- Use accent lighting selectively to highlight shelves, artwork, textures or architectural features without creating glare.
- Choose brightness and colour temperature for how the room is actually used rather than making every room equally bright and the same colour.
- Control glare by considering lamp position, shade/diffuser design, viewing angle and reflective surfaces.
- Use separate switches, dimmers or smart controls where useful so the room can operate at different light levels.
- For new fixed wiring, new lighting circuits, bathroom zones or significant alterations, use a competent electrician and follow the applicable electrical/building requirements.
Practical tips
- A single high-output ceiling light can make a room feel flat; layers of lower-intensity light often feel more comfortable.
- Task lights should illuminate the work area without shining directly into your eyes.
- Do not place indoor-rated fittings in damp or wet locations unless they are designed and rated for that environment.
What you may need
