  4. If the circuit is dimmed, confirm both the LED lamp and dimmer are compatible. Older dimmers designed for high-wattage incandescent loads can cause flicker or poor low-level performance with LEDs.
  5. Use occupancy or presence sensors where lights are often left on unnecessarily, such as circulation spaces, utility areas or some external lights, but set timings so they remain practical and safe.
  6. Use daylight sensors or schedules for exterior lighting rather than leaving it on continuously where permanent lighting is not required.
  7. Treat smart bulbs and app control as convenience/automation tools rather than a guarantee of savings; the main saving still comes from efficient lamps and avoiding unnecessary operating hours.
  8. For fixed light fittings, new circuits or uncertain electrical work, use a competent electrician rather than altering wiring as part of an energy-saving project.

Practical tips

  • A lower-wattage LED can produce similar light to a much higher-wattage older lamp, so compare lumens.
  • Very cheap LEDs may have poorer colour quality, driver life or dimmer compatibility; check reputable product specifications.
  • Do not reduce lighting to unsafe levels simply to reduce energy use—good controls let light operate when it is actually needed.
