What Size Skip Do I Need? UK Skip Size Guide
Choose a sensible UK skip size by considering waste volume, weight, project type, access, permits, PPE and materials that may need separate disposal.
- Identify the main waste type before choosing a skip. Light bulky waste such as timber, packaging and furniture is mainly limited by volume, while soil, rubble, concrete and other dense materials are often limited by weight first.
- Estimate the volume using familiar comparisons rather than exact geometry alone. As a rough planning guide, a 2-yard mini skip may suit a very small clear-out, 4 yards a modest room or garden job, 6 yards a typical builders-skip project, 8 yards a larger renovation, and 10–12+ yards bulky lighter waste. Actual dimensions and capacities vary by supplier.
- Use bin-bag equivalents only as a rough visual aid. Providers use different bag assumptions, so compare the cubic-yard size and the supplier’s stated dimensions as well as any bag-count estimate.
- For heavy inert waste, check the operator’s restrictions before upsizing. Soil, rubble, slabs and concrete can make a large skip too heavy to lift even when it is nowhere near full by volume.
