How to Lay Turf: Ground Preparation, Laying & Aftercare

Prepare soil properly before laying turf and understand why watering and early aftercare matter as much as the number of rolls ordered.

  1. Clear weeds, rubble and old vegetation and improve obvious drainage or compaction problems before bringing fresh turf onto site.
  2. Cultivate and level the topsoil to a suitable depth, remove large stones and produce a firm but not compacted surface.
  3. Rake to a fine, even tilth and check finished levels against paths, edging and drainage before laying the first roll.
  4. Lay turf as soon as practical after delivery so rolls do not heat up or dry out while stacked.

Lawn Care Basics: Mowing, Feeding, Aerating, Scarifying & Moss

Understand the main lawn-maintenance jobs and when problems such as compaction, thatch, moss or bare patches need different treatment.

  1. Mow according to grass growth rather than a rigid calendar and avoid removing a very large proportion of the leaf in one cut.
  2. Keep mower blades sharp and vary mowing direction to reduce persistent wheel ruts and flattening.
  3. Feed only with products suited to the season and lawn condition, following application rates carefully to avoid scorching or excessive soft growth.
  4. Aerate compacted areas where poor air/water movement is affecting growth; heavily used lawns may need more attention than lightly used ornamental areas.
