How to Plan a Curtain Pole or Track: Position, Brackets & Support
Plan pole length, bracket positions and safe wall fixings before hanging curtains, with extra attention to long spans and heavy fabrics.
- Choose the finished pole or track position before buying curtains. Make sure there is enough space above and beside the window for brackets, finials and curtain stack-back.
- Measure the window/recess and add the side projection needed for coverage. Manufacturer and retailer guidance commonly allows additional width on both sides, but the final amount depends on the curtain style and available wall space.
- Check the pole or track manufacturer’s maximum unsupported span. Long poles and heavy curtains may need one or more centre/support brackets rather than relying on a generic bracket count.
- Identify the wall construction at every bracket location. Masonry, timber studs, plasterboard and lintels require different drilling/fixing strategies.
